Hedgerows between Askov and Vejen
North and South of the Ancient Road between the Vejen Sports Centre and Askov there are a number of hedgerows lined with oak trees, which were originally planted to provide shelter.
The history of the hedgerows harks back to the period before the 1794 land reform in Denmark when village farms were moved out into their fields. Before that time, village farmers had cultivated the land on a community basis. The hedgerows market the new boundaries between the individual fields.
In 1987, a total of 4.7 km of hedgerows between Askov and Vejen came under nature preservation. This was to maintain the oak-lined hedgerows as significant markers in the landscape.
